State of the Network: October
Over the last six months, the Swarm network has shown substantial growth and increased activity. This is evident from the rising total monthly rewards, average and median win values, and the average earnings per active staking node. The number of active nodes, both staking and non-staking, has significantly increased, with a notable rise in active staking nodes, especially from countries like China, Germany, and Finland.

The Way Forward
Thirteen years have now passed since the introduction of Bitcoin in 2009. We can only wonder whether Satoshi Nakamoto could have imagined the wave his creation would start. Over twenty thousand crypto projects are currently listed by trackers worldwide, with a total value of about one trillion dollars (as of October 2022).

Why Interoperability is the Bedrock of Digital Freedom
The European Union is a remarkable project granting us many freedoms so convenient it’s all too easy to take them for granted. We can easily move our goods, our bucks, and ourselves between different countries within it. This freedom to move and provide services anywhere is the cornerstone of the democratic and open way of life and economy in Europe.

Swarm Community Call, 28 September — Recap
In the past month, the most notable release was Bee 1.17.4. It features an advanced Bee logging system for the pushsync and the retrieval protocols, vital components responsible for syncing chunks among nodes. Since this is a breaking change, all node operators should update to the latest version of Bee as soon as possible, if they haven't yet.

Is Net Neutrality Important for Blockchains?
Today, Tim Wu is a law professor at Columbia University and a White House official who advises the Biden administration on legal and economic issues. But in 2003, he was an associate professor at the University of Virginia Law School. Back then, he coined a term that still shapes the debate about fair use of the communications infrastructure and the Internet: “net neutrality.”

Oracle Boosts Swarm's Self-sustainability
Swarm’s storage incentives rollout has been moving forward at a healthy pace over the last few months. After rollout of the staking system in phase 2, phase 3 will be focused on the storage rent oracle. The oracle lays the technical foundation for the final two phases of the storage incentives rollout, and is vital to the overall functioning of the system.
